DOMESTIC GEOMETRY

DETROIT, MI — Originally designed and built between 1915 and 1925 by renowned industrial architect Albert Kahn for the Murray Body Corporation, the 2.2 million-square-foot Russell Industrial Center once produced automobile bodies that helped build Detroit's manufacturing economy. Today, its vast concrete buildings have found a second life as the Midwest's largest artist community, home to more than 100 studios, galleries, makers, and creative businesses (including the location of my first studio in 2008). Repurposed through art, entrepreneurship, and an enduring spirit of reinvention, the industrial landmark is emblematic of Detroit itself.

LIVONIA, MI — The long-abandoned Shelden Pool, where I first learned to swim in 1978 and spent countless summer days submerged in refreshing, cool water, when access felt ordinary and summer belonged to everyone. The site is slated for redesign as a splash park.  Many municipalities prioritize splash pads over pools because they are significantly cheaper to build and maintain. They do not require lifeguards or expensive chemical filtration on the scale of a full pool.  What gets lost is the full-bodied summer swimming experience: early morning toddler lessons, somersaults in the quieting water, the courage of diving off the board, and the deep relief of being completely immersed.  The loss echoes the old Jim Crow geography of public water, traced along economic lines that often trace the same racial ones.

DETROIT, MI — For six months, I had exclusive access to document the rupture of the Detroit Leland Hotel: a grand 1927 landmark turned long-term, low-income refuge, suddenly evacuated leaving dozens displaced. I photographed the trauma, the unmooring, the loss, the locked rooms, the recovery of belongings, and the slow, uneven process of moving on. The Leland is more than a building.
