Through sustained involvement, Karen highlights those confronting unsafe housing, eviction, and uncertain futures in Detroit and beyond. Her advocacy centers on listening, showing up, and keeping residents’ experiences visible. As the only photographer permitted to document the evacuation, five-month-long displacement, and residents’ return of the Leland Hotel, she follow the story beyond the headlines, tracing losses of belongings, community, and stability. Her coverage of the Leland was featured on ABC, NBC, CBS, Spectrum News, and other broadcast media. Articles appeared in the Left Voice.
Karen has continued to support the Detroit Tenants Union since the formation of the Leland Hotel chapter in December 2025 as well as its work within the larger work in Detroit and its involvement in the national Tenants Union Federation. Her work reflects a sustained commitment to residents fighting for safe, stable places to call home.
