South Carolina Ocean Getaway

June 9, 2024

We spent Memorial Day weekend in fun and sun at Litchfield Beach on Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. We took time to walk up and down the beach, including at night. (There’s something magical about a night walk in the ocean tide.) We even caught a stunning MOON rise (yes, not a sunset) over the Atlantic the first night.

We stayed 2 miles from Brookgreen Gardens, a nature preserve and botanical gardens. We spent the last two hours of operating hours on Friday hightailing it through both the gardens and zoo. We wish we had more time to slow down and really take it all in. The time limitation plus the oppressive heat and humidity did us in.

On Sunday, we ventured south to one of my favorite cities, Charleston. We’ve been to Charleston several times, but never took the trip to Fort Sumpter. We spent the morning enjoying the ferry and the visit to the fort, followed by a delicious seafood lunch with my aunt and uncle, who live in Mt. Pleasant, at the Fish House.

After lunch, we headed to downtown Charleston, where we enjoyed ice cream, a breeze through the Charleston Place Hotel (where I’ve stayed twice and adore!), cruised through the Charleston City Market, then walked back for a scrumptious dinner at 39 Rue de Jean.
